View Publisher files without Publisher

A .pub file only opens in Microsoft Publisher, which has only ever run on Windows and leaves Microsoft 365 on 1 October 2026. If someone has sent you a newsletter, flyer or brochure as a .pub file, or you've found old ones on a shared drive, this viewer shows you what's inside without installing anything. It reads the Publisher format directly in your browser and draws each page with its text, fonts, colours, shapes and pictures. What the Publisher retirement means for your files.

How to open a .pub file online

  1. Drop the .pub file onto the box above, or click the box to choose it. You can open several files at once.
  2. Wait a few seconds while your browser reads the file. Long documents with lots of pictures take a little longer.
  3. Scroll through the pages. Fit width makes each page fill the viewer, the + and − buttons zoom in and out, and Full screen gives you the whole display.
  4. To keep, print or edit the document, download it as a PDF, Word, PowerPoint or HTML file.

What the viewer shows

Every page of the document in order, at its real size and shape, with each text box, shape and picture where Publisher placed it. Above the pages you'll see the title and author saved in the file, the number of pages and the page size. Multi-page newsletters, folded brochures, landscape posters, and A4, A5 or Letter pages all display. A quick look is often all you need to find the right file in an old archive before deciding what to keep.

Free to view, pay only to download

Viewing is free and needs no account. The viewer shows a faint PREVIEW mark over the pages, and its text can't be selected or copied. When you want a clean copy to keep, print or edit, download the document in another format. One credit unlocks PDF, Word, PowerPoint and HTML for that file, so you can try more than one.

Private by design

Many online converters upload your document to their servers first. This viewer doesn't: the file is opened by your own browser and never leaves your device. That matters for membership lists, church bulletins, school newsletters and business documents that carry names, addresses and phone numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the .pub viewer really free?

Yes. Opening and reading a Publisher file costs nothing and doesn't need an account. You only pay if you want to download the document as a PDF, Word, PowerPoint or HTML file.

Can I open .pub files on a Mac or Chromebook?

Yes. Publisher has never been available for Mac or ChromeOS, but the viewer runs in any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox) on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebooks.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file on your own device. It is never sent to our servers, so documents with names, addresses or business details stay private.

Which Publisher versions can it open?

Files from Publisher 2003 and later, including 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365.

Can I print, copy or edit the file in the viewer?

No. The viewer is for reading: it shows a faint PREVIEW mark and its text can't be selected. Download a PDF to print or share the document, or a Word or PowerPoint file to edit it.

Why are some backgrounds or clip art missing?

Files made from Publisher's built-in templates can use backgrounds, clip art and decorative graphics stored in Publisher's template gallery on the original computer, not inside the .pub file. No viewer or converter can show them. The text, shapes and your own pictures still display.
